Throughout the ages, for one reason or another, not everybody was on board with the Nativity. At times, because of persecution, it was necessary to adapt or find alternate ways to celebrate Christ and his birth. The symbols and colors of Christmas today we take for granted and it just seems traditions are handed down generation after generation. For early Christians the celebration of Christmas meant becoming a bit creative.
Red- the atonement
Green- everlasting
Blue- might of angels singing
Yellow- sun/son
Silver- 30 pieces paid for His life
Gold- one of the gifts
Evergreen- branches reach upward to Heaven
Wreath- eternity
Candy cane- shepherds
Lights/Candles- believers
Star- way to find Him whose birth we celebrate
*And for those believers, I hope you got to enjoy the Christmas star last night!
Swaddling cloth- male baby sheep without blemish put in a manger
Myrrh- holy ointment for embalming
Frankincense- holy incense for sacrificial purposes
Christmas takes on a whole new meaning doesn't it?
