I have always wondered what it would have been like to grow up in a house with a porch that goes all the way around, with rocking chairs and room for everyone from the neighborhood.
At this time of year there would have been veggies from the garden to prepare, like shelling peas, snapping the beans and shucking the corn. Meanwhile, old family stories would be told and retold so that teach generation could get to know family members they never even met. As the sun would go down and a cool breeze blows in, it would be time to tell those stories or harmonize with familiar gospel hymns, while kids would try to catch lightning bugs or watch a June bug fly around on the end of a string. There may not have been air conditioning or internet or TV in every room, but there was love. It was respect for everyone and a gratitude for all that was provided at the end of a hard days work. Wow, a day spent like that at a house with a porch wrapped all the way around. I would have loved to have been wrapped up in all that love.
